I’m Back: A New Chapter
If you're reading this and you're familiar with my work, you're probably reminded of my writing as it relates to restaurants, hospitality, leadership and creating a meaningful career in this super challenging industry.
In the past 5 years, I haven't written much of anything at all. For a number of reasons, but mainly, I wasn't sure what else I had to say. So, I've just been plugging away teaching culinary school, doing consulting work with various restaurants and even ran one over the last year.
But, a conversation I often had with myself over these last handful of years was:
"What does the industry need from me?"
Before becoming a food safety instructor, my interest in it was solely on passing the required tests, i.e. ServSafe. Like many in the hospitality industry, I viewed food safety as just another box to check. But as I delved deeper into the subject, I realized how vital it is for both safety and quality in the restaurant world. In a very tangible way, it is inextricably linked to my passion for leadership and company culture.
Having spent two decades in hospitality and the last decade teaching food safety, I've seen firsthand how the industry often lacks a practical, real-world perspective - if you've ever been to one of those all day ServSafe seminars, you know exactly what I'm talking about. They are often equal parts mind-numbing and excruciating.
That’s why I’ve created this platform—to bring a connected, experience-driven voice to food safety. It’s not just about following rules or appeasing the health department; it’s about creating a culture of safety and excellence in every kitchen. All the best chefs out there know, how you do one thing is how you do anything. So, I'm excited to bring a new voice and new perspective to the industry and I'm excited to have you join me - let's navigate these challenging times together.
